Dhamaka on Netflix Review: A Very Average Thriller!

Dhamaka on Netflix, a 2021 Bollywood thriller, stars Kartik Aaryan in the primary role with Amruta Subhash and Mrunal Thakur in supporting roles. Directed by Ram Madhvani (Neerja and Aarya fame), the storyline spreads across a single day where a recently demoted prime-time news reporter, Arjun Pathak, gets an opportunity to exclusively report a bomb blast in the city and talk to the perpetrator of the attack.

With the entire course of events only taking place across a single day, Dhamaka on Netflix employs a sense of urgency in its screenplay. Be it the crisp 102-minute runtime, the hand-held camera technique, and the time crunch within the story to make quick decisions worked in favor of the film. And for the most part, it made the Ram Madhvani directorial a serviceable thriller.

However, when it comes to the actual story and the narrative decisions of the writers, Dhamaka on Netflix almost lost me or, at least, did not leave a long-lasting impact. The absurd scenarios, the plot holes, and the illogical scenes took away from the intrigue, and a better believable plot, similar to what we’ve seen in Neeraj Pandey’s A Wednesday, could’ve worked better and seemed more digestible to the viewer.

Kartik Aaryan came out of his comfort zone and played a character that is a complete contrast to what we’ve seen from his previous movies — Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Love Aaj Kal, and more. While I appreciate his effort or thought to do something different, his very mediocre acting skills did not match the intensity of his character, and he tried his best to make things work. Amruta Subhash, as the ruthless television producer, is a delight to watch on-screen and stole the show just like she does every single time. Mrunal Thakur, in a more extended cameo appearance, failed to impress.

Overall, Dhamaka on Netflix is a very ordinary thriller that is suitable to watch if you’re just bored and want to something to pass the time. A better and more convincing story would’ve helped, but my expectations weren’t too high, especially for a Netflix Original film. Watch ‘Dhamaka on Netflix’ here.
