Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Review – Imaginative & Epic!

Outside of superhero films and television shows like Game of Thrones, rarely do audiences get a fantasy film with all of the mystical elements they love without being tied to a much larger universe. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the perfect speculative genre movie with loveable characters, action-packed sequences, and a tale everybody can get behind about love and family.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Jesse Smith, and Sophia Lillis as a band of noble thieves on a quest to find a lost relic. Just like the game, they come across a number of villains and run into obstacles that they must face in order to complete their journey.

The camera work and action sequences are a marvel to watch, one in particular regarding a portal jumping scene with tinted angled camerawork that is beyond thrilling. All of the action feels choreographed in a fun-loving way without having to be violent. At the end of the day, Dungeons and Dragons is a game for all ages, so getting to see a film that grabs hold of the feeling of the game and its audience is refreshing to see.

In the way that the game Dungeons and Dragons is played through imagination and creativity by the game players, the movie’s constant jumping from obstacle to obstacle felt relative to the heart of the game. Although it had a general plot to it, it also felt like a number of sequences tied together in the way that the game is played. The film strived to stay true to the feeling of its source material while also adding a fun comical spin with loveable characters to root for.

The humor in the film was quirky and cute without feeling over the top or like it was trying too hard. The comedy felt like mid-2000s family films without feeling juvenile at all. Although a number of the situations the characters find themselves in are difficult, the team never feels at odds with each other and they all work as a team no matter what.

They all have different abilities that make them essential to the quest and they display these in a comedic way while also showing how these thieves can be heroes too. Honor Among Thieves is a fantastic time at the theater with everything you want in a fantasy action movie for the whole family.

‘D&D: Honor Among Thieves’ Rating – 3.75/5
