Crimes of the Future was written and directed by David Cronenberg and stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart in the primary roles. The film tells the story of a man and a performer who showcases surgeries and the new organs he has grown inside his body. Soon a man approaches him trying to use his audience to showcase his son’s unique mutation.

Well, I checked Crimes of the Future last Thursday, and it was certainly unique. I have never seen a film like this before. It was incredibly weird and intriguing. While that was true, I just felt this movie never gained any momentum and just felt a bit stagnant. There was no growth or endgame.

I enjoyed the direction though. David Cronenberg does an excellent job and writes a coherent script, which, as I said, had its moments but never quite got going. The cinematography by Douglas Koch is also really well done. This film looks really good, especially on the big screen I saw it on.

As far as the performances go, every cast member is solid through and through. Viggo Mortensen is excellently weird, Léa Seydoux is also really good, and Kristen Stewart is unnervingly obsessive and creepy. All in all, Crime of the Future is a movie that’s certainly not for everyone but has a unique vision and path. David Cronenberg’s return to sci-fi is a success, but it could have been better.

Emergency (2022) on Amazon Prime Video, is directed by Carey Williams, written by K. D. Dávila, and stars RJ Cyler as Sean, Donald Elise Watkins as Kunle, Sebastian Chacon as Carlos, and Sabrina Carpenter as Maddy. What starts as a classic one night of legendary college partying between two friends turns into a complicated mess of trying to decide what the right thing to do is when faced with a crisis.

At the heart of it Emergency (2022) asks a simple question — “What are three people of color supposed to do when faced with a crisis?” for many people, the answer is “Call the police.” As we all know, that’s not truly the best option. What I appreciate from this film was how funny it was, Carey Williams is really able to take this stressful situation and bring levity to it.

It handles the subject matter well with plenty of commentary (some more in your face than other). I also think that Watkins did a great job in his role playing someone who is black but comes from a more suburban background compared to his friend. I also praise the movie for keeping me guessing how it would end. It does suffer with some pacing issues, the writing isn’t perfect, and it goes on a little too long. All in all, Emergency (2022) is a good comedic and dramatic take on social commentary.
