Cobra Kai S4 Review: A Complete Blast from the Past!

Cobra Kai returned for their fourth season bringing a much more expanded universe complete with a blast from the past shady character. Thomas Ian Griffith reprises his role as Terry Silver, an old army buddy of John Kreese. Together they plan to expand Cobra Kai’s influence in the Valley and snuff out their competition Eagle Fang and Miyagi-Do. Old rivalries come to a head at the All Valley Under 18 tournament in an all or nothing gamble.

Cobra Kai works so well because we’re firmly in the period of nostalgia. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the 80s ruled the subgenre of teen dramedy. In the 90s they became more silly than substance which led to their demise (almost). That’s why shows like Sex Education attempt to recapture that 80’s essence. Because it works. The show does a stellar job of blending old storylines, characters and feuds with the new. As ever, the soundtrack puts you squarely in the 80’s so you never forget it’s roots.

One notable thing about this season was how they got Amanda more involved. The boys have men to guide them but the girls don’t have that relationship and Amanda can provide that. I like Tory more with every passing season. Sam has her moments but she was always a bit annoying to me. That being said, I couldn’t be happier that Cobra Kai added more female characters to the respective dojos. In fact, women and girls were a major focus point this season but it was also handled well.

The finale was well orchestrated and I feel like Jacob Bertrand displays the most skill and athleticism in the sport therefore providing a better showing. It also helps keep the focus on the girl’s rivalry and showdown. One thing Cobra Kai emphasizes is that everyone has their story. Even those we deem the villain and that situations aren’t always black and white. It’s entertaining watching these kids grow as fighters and people.

If I had to explain Cobra Kai’s vibe it would be something of a cross between Street Fighter and some sort of deranged comic… with teenagers. I didn’t enjoy this season as much as last. Honestly it mostly felt like setup for the next arc…and I’m ok with that. Cobra Kai is still one of the best remakes of all time!

‘Cobra Kai Season 4’ Rating – 4/5
