Bo Burnham: Inside Review – Relatable & Surprisingly Powerful!

So Bo Burnham, over the past year, got stuck inside his room, so he made multiple comedy, musical skits, and the 87-minute special made its debut on Netflix on May 30th, 2021. Now I barely knew about Bo Burnham, so I do not know much about his previous works. However, it’s remarkable that almost everything was put together by him: the camera, editing, lyrics, lighting, special effects, etc. With most of his time staying indoors, he exercised his brain muscles and utilized the tech that he had.

Of course, what made Bo Burnham’s Inside great was the skits. The ones that I enjoyed the most were when he imitated multiple aspects of social media and the Internet. They were incredibly creative, with some being unexpectedly realistic and relatable. There were also ones that pointed at the world, and honestly, some didn’t land with me.

Now, since Bo Burnham’s Inside was a sequence of many skits, it could run into a problem of having no overall structure. However, Bo Burnham’s changing mental state was the underlying plot behind these entertaining skits. A couple of times between the skits, he addressed his current state, and it was clear that he started to descend a bit into some madness and depression. This was not too surprising, considering the amount of time that he was inside his house.

Although the sequences were funny, there were also some sad moments. At one point, he celebrated his birthday, and oh boy, it was sad and made me feel sorry for his loneliness. This leads to the themes of a very special movie. There are two sides to being stuck indoors. It is the opportunity where one can become creative and create unique content. However, being alone for too long becomes unhealthy and can bring you to your all-time low. Many are going through these states, and Bo Burnham is just among them.

Besides some skits not landing, I felt the special quite long for just an hour and 27 minutes. Overall, it an incredible special from Bo Burnham. Relatable and surprisingly powerful! Watch ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ on Netflix here.
