Bholaa Review: Emphasis on Aesthetics Over Substance!
Bholaa is an action-thriller with a huge cache of drugs worth “dus hazaar karor” that constitutes the crux of the film. It revolves around Bholaa, who after serving a 10-year prison sentence, embarks on a perilous journey to reunite with his daughter, encountering dangerous obstacles along the way.
Bholaa has a decent base story, an incredible cast, rustic style and action, decent VFX, good adrenaline pumping background score, and fairly good direction. However, it lacks a good screenplay that is the backbone of any film. The film remains largely engaging, especially for Devgn fans, logic-defying action lovers, or those who enjoy the main cast’s presence and performances.
The cast and the interestingly designed characters make it worth watching, with each character having a distinct style and get up. The performances of Deepak Dobriyal and Sanjay Mishra are impressive, while Ajay Devgn and Tabu are good in their roles. The film is a good one-time watch at best, for a select audience.
However, the film is interspersed with sequences that drag or are borderline irritating. The film could have benefited from tighter editing and a slightly shorter run time. The influence of south style loud treatment is evident, not tweaked enough to suit the Hindi film palate. The film could have been better if the writers had focused on the screenplay rather than just the action and style. Overall, Bholaa is enjoyable but falls short of its potential.
