4. Anbirkiniyal

Director – Gokul
Starring – Keerthi & Arun Pandian

Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from our ‘Anbirkiniyal’ Review]

Anbirkiniyal is based on several actual incidents and is an official remake of the Malayalam film ‘Helen.’ Directed by Gokul, the film went on to get good critical acclaim and is a decent survival thriller. The comical scenes placed provide some quick relief and keeps the serious tone at bay for a moment. With adequate performance from the cast, especially from Arun and Keerthi Pandian, this movie entertains, to an extent, and is a decent watch.

3. Master

Director – Lokesh Kanagaraj
Starring – Vijay & Vijay Sethupathi
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from our ‘Master’ Review]

Next on the list of the Best Tamil Movies of 2021, Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi starrer Master explore the journey of JD, an alcoholic educator, who is selected to teach at a juvenile facility. But, he soon fights with a vicious outlaw, who utilizes the children at the facility as scapegoats for his crimes. A complete commercial film made for his fans, Master, with stellar performances from the cast, is a decent watch.

2. Maara

Director – Dhilip Kumar
Starring – R. Madhavan & Shraddha Srinath
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from our ‘Maara’ Review]

Maara, an Amazon Prime Video Original, tells the story of a restoration artist Paaru, played brilliantly by Shraddha Srinath, who searches for a traveler Maara (R. Madhavan), after finding an abandoned sketchbook and a photo of him while staying at his house. Adapting the primary plot from the original, Charlie (Malayalam film), Dhilip Kumar, the director, had done a fantastic job in tweaking the subject a little as this film is nothing short of visual poetry and has the potential to overshadow the original.

1. Karnan

Director – Mari Selvaraj
Starring – Dhanush, Lal
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from our ‘Karnan’ Review]

Without a doubt, one of the Best Tamil Movies of 2021, Karnan tells the story of a courageous guy, who must struggle and fight for the rights of the conservative people of his hometown due to the cruelty shown by a police officer. Right from the start, this movie portrays itself as the vision of Director Mari Selvaraj. He uses the power of visuals and metaphors to his benefit, which drives the film. Backed by some fantastic performances from Dhanush and a striking background score by Santhosh Narayanan, this film is a raging cry of the voiceless, desirous to be heard.
