Among the flurry of realistic movies, Malayalam Film Industry failed to provide us with Romantic Malayalam Movies in the last seven years. It produced quite a few game-changing movies in the aforementioned genre, and the last exemplary movie of that stature was Thattathin Marayathu, which released back in 2012.

Thattathin Marayathu was the buzzword for youngsters back in the day when it comes to love and friendship. Also, there were romantic movies that inspired and defined the generation intermittently like Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal and Aniyathipraavu. However, such solid romantic movies are nowhere to be found in the recent era. This list is an attempt to incorporate movies with romance on the upper hand than the other genre handled. Luca (2019)

Arun Bose’s Luca is a romantic thriller, which is a different combination in conventional movie making. The film handles the intense love story of Luca (Tovino Thomas) and Niharika (Ahaana Krishna), who accidentally come across at a Biennale. The love between them is almost psychic which carries us to another world of artistic elements. Moving on to the positives, much to the filmmaker’s credit, the movie broke quite a few stereotypes, one of them is the unconventional story. The dramatic part of the movie will leave a series of questions on all our minds, but, the romantic part of the film is so pleasing to watch.

Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (2019)

Jis Joy’s Vijay Superum Pournamiyum is a one of the best romantic Malayalam movies and a feel-good movie with a perfect touch of both romance and comedy. The storyline of this 145-minute entertainer follows Vijay (Asif Ali) and Pournami (Aishwarya Lekshmi) who meet in an extraordinary situation, where they get to know about each other, connect themselves despite their differences. Eventually, life changes around them when the lazy lad joins the inspiring girl as they start a business together. Despite that they tend to travel in two different directions, but, something holds their relationship together which is the selling point and the most appealing aspect of the movie.
June (2019)
Starring – Rajisha Vijayan and Sarjano Khalid
Director – Ahammed Khabeer

Ahammed Khabeer’s movie is a coming-of-age of a girl named “June.†With fun-filled elements of school life and afterwards, the film showcases the romantic journey of June through various stages. The teenage romance of June (Rajisha Vijayan) with Noel (Sarjano Khalid) was displayed the most in the movie, as it lapped from her school life to her professional career. Anand (Arjun Ashokan) was a genuine guy who was following June almost every time, and that tale was told through a song in the second half of the movie. Overall, June is a feel-good movie filled with some old-fashioned ideas, still, fit as a romantic drama movie.

Neeyum Njanum
Starring – Anu Sithara and Sharaf U Dheen
Director – A K Sajan
Streaming Platform – Hotstar
A K Sajan’s Neeyum Njanum is an old-fashioned romantic story with some contemporary elements, packed with thrill and comedy. The plot revolves around Hashmi (Anu Sithara) and Yakub (Sharaf U Dheen), their conventional style of love from roadside stalking to the protagonist’s sheer persistence ending up in a happily married couple. The romantic musical first half is pleasing to watch, and the movie diversifies the mood in the second half.
In the turmoil of events, Hashmi and Yakub had a lot of hurdles in the waiting. The thrilling second half is filled with cute romantic moments of Hashmi from the past, and it’s delightful to watch the story from the female lead’s perspective. Though the movie has social and political implications, the heart of Neeyum Njanum is pure romance and it is certainly one Best Romantic Malayalam Movies of 2019.
