Avengers: Age of Ultron – Movie Review

“The earth’s mightiest heroes reunite.” Topping every single movie fanatic’s most anticipated movies list, Age of Ultron aggregated huge excitement all over the world with its impressive trailers and TV spots. It was destined to deliver a remarkable and a splendid sequel surpassing its predecessor but is it really possible? After a hectic invasion for capturing Loki’s scepter in Eastern Europe, Tony Stark, and Bruce Banner discovers a hidden trump related to artificial intelligence inside the scepter which could be useful for completing Stark’s Ultron program and decides to keep it under observation. Unexpectedly, things go worse when Ultron (AI robot) revives himself into an antagonist with a primitive armor and ensures that he will destroy the human race from planet earth making it a better place to live.

They’re few aspects about the sequel that deserves appreciation, so let’s set aside the good things about this movie. To begin with, the illustration of the characters in this movie felt very special to me, including Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Bruce Banner. Now, if you truly observe, we didn’t really get to learn more about these characters that I just mentioned, only because of the nonexistence of their own stand-alone movies in this cinematic universe. Thus, we get to learn more about Hawkeye and his relationship with his family, the unsettling and ominous past of Black Widow and about an interesting connection that Natasha Romanoff and Bruce Banner share among themselves. Now, we’ll progress with the obvious question of every fan boy, “Will we get our pennies worth?” Yes! Joss Whedon certainly understands the significance of the comedic aspect of the movie and made sure that all the funny one-liners are delivered properly including the quick-witted humor these characters share in the movie.

The action sequences surpasses every single positive aspect of the movie, the movie kicks off with an immense action scene and ends with an enormous one too, and they’re indeed mind-boggling to watch. However, here’s my little concern, the movie is about 123 minutes long and the climax battle scene occupies 30 minutes from the actual runtime. Is it really necessary? With the contemporary fast-cut edit style, at a certain point, things start to get a little disconcerting, which is surely a letdown for the movie.

But, here’s what I felt, are these superhero movies getting generic? If you pay a little attention, the climax of both the Avenger movies is partly the same, aliens replaced by robots, the vibe looks a little reminiscing, and it felt repetitive. The only upsetting reason is that, DC and Marvel released a long slate of their upcoming movies until 2020. At the moment, people are already getting tired following this substandard storytelling style; it’s currently up to the directors and screenwriters to approach the audience in a different way but with an interesting premise.

Overall, Age of Ultron is an enthralling experience, with many riveting action sequences, funny humor, and interesting characters. Nevertheless, from a critical standpoint, the movie is a letdown when compared to its prequel, as it never tells a unique story which we’ve certainly not seen it before.

My Rating – 2.75/5 | Grade – C+
