Another Simple Favor & The Accountant 2 – Movie Reviews
Is the first Simple Favor movie perfect? No, but I totally see what is enjoyable about it, despite its messiness. At the end of the day, that movie is extremely camp and works in the parameters that it set for itself. Is the same true for the sequel? In my mind, no. Everything that you liked from the first film is definitely present here and cranked up to eleven. Some people are going to love the direction it goes in, but I found it to be way over the top and frankly unbelievably absurd. What was once camp is now teetering on being a soap drama.
Let’s take the performances: I think Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are both fine enough in the first film. Sure, it’s silly but it works. In Another Simple Favor, both of their antics are dialed up here. Kendrick leans extremely heavily into the anxious yet sometimes overconfident erratic behavior whereas Lively is incredibly slimy and sleazy while being able to get the waterworks going whenever needed. If that seems like fun, it might work for you. But much like this bizarre plot, I found it to be overcompensating for just how little this movie actually had to offer.
Sure, the twists are a bit bigger and maybe even crazier, but sometimes crazier isn’t better. Another Simple Favor has clearly bitten off way more than it can chew this time around and becomes too much to handle. It’s too silly and goofy for what the first established in my mind. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the climax of this film is so embarrassingly done it’s nearly unwatchable. A real let down.

The Accountant 2 is directed by Gavin O’Connor, written by Bill Dubuque, starring Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Daniella Pineda. Eight years after the events of the first film Chris Wolff gets caught up in the activities of a criminal organization and calls in his brother to take them down.
I thought it was weird when I heard the announcement of a sequel to a movie that came out nine years ago. But the first one was somewhat successful so I guess why not. I don’t remember the first very well but I do think this was an improvement from what I can remember. The start is somewhat rocky as it tries to set up this movie but also has to remind the audience who all these characters are.
This movies strength comes from the increased use of Bernthal. When he and Ben Affleck are on the screen together it’s fun to watch good chemistry between them. The character of Marybeth is okay acting as the moral foil to the vigilantes but not particularly interesting. The action scenes are pretty slick with a great payoff at the end, and it seems that they’ve set themselves up to make a third movie should they want to and I don’t think that would be terrible. All in all, The Accountant 2 is an unexpected sequel and one that improves on its predecessor.
