Rock On 2 - Movie Review

Verdict - "A monotonous and a lot less exciting sequel."

Marketed as a sequel to the 2008 surprise musical hit "Rock On!!", Rock On 2 directed by Shujaat Saudagar hit the screens this Friday after years of anticipation and eagerness from fans including myself. I still remember the time back in 2008 when almost every song from the film was a chartbuster and when the movie proved to be a neoteric trendsetter for the younger generation. So nearly after eight years of build up will the film deliver to its expectations or will it evaporate as just another unadorned sequel.

The film opens up with KD (Purab Kohli) reintroducing us to the main characters of the film with him enduring his passion by producing music with a bunch of beginners, Joe (Arjun Rampal) now a successful owner of a music bistro and a judge of a singing reality show and Aditya who isolated himself from his family looks after a small town welfare community in the state of Meghalaya. On the flipside, we also get introduced to Jiah (Shraddha Kapoor) and Uday (Shashank Arora), two young passionate upstarts who somehow come across KD, Joe and Adi looking for an opportunity. How will the introduction of Jiah affect the lives of the trio? Will they reform Magik?

What made the previous film extra unique was its laid-back vibe and the simple yet emotive storyline that felt relatable. But with the sequel the story parted in few different directions with none of them ended up being interesting or compelling. The characters were weakly written with no engaging factor, the dialogue was substandard and the climax was far-stretched and easily predictable. Although the direction from Shujaat Saudagar was decent, it didn't really help the film relatively which winded up as a monotonous and an unexciting sequel.

On the other hand, regardless of the songs not being remarkable when compared to its original and my opinion is that the music is not too bad or catastrophic as people complain. It was more contrast and fitted well with the storyline. The performances were acceptable from the complete cast throughout the film and left me with no further complaints.

Overall, Rock On 2 felt like a letdown in few aspects of writing and storyline  when compared to its predecessor. Even though it had few watchable moments once for every twenty minutes, I wouldn't recommend you to go rush to the theatre to check out this film, but a casual cable watch on a cozy comforting evening is suggested.

My Rating - 2.5/5
Grade - C+ (It deserves your attention for a while)
