Den of Thieves & Game Night - Double Header Reviews

Greetings interwebs! What are you guys up to these days? Well, I've been passing my free time checking out movies that I missed watching and they're a few good ones out there that I cannot miss. I honestly love doing these Double Header Reviews only because of the fact that I don't have to rush my reviews and take some time to analyze and contemplate before giving my thoughts to you guys. On this edition of Double Header Reviews, I'll be talking about two films which garnered a positive response from the audience and the critics when they're released, one of them is the Gerald Butler starrer Den of Thieves and the next one is Game Night starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams.

As always, let's see how well these films were received critically and commercially. Den of Thieves made 79.9 million worldwide with a production budget of 30 million and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 41%. Maze Runner: The Death Cure made 114.1 million worldwide from its 37 million production budget and with a Tomatometer score of 82%.

"Den of Thieves" Overall Thoughts / My Rating - 3/5

Directed by Christian Gudegast, Den of Thieves is a heist film and tells the story about two gangs, one is the police team led by a cocky and an arrogant Detective in Gerard Butler and the other clan is a bunch of evil bank robbers who wipe out anything in their way to get the job done. As the two teams face-off, we get a series of exhilarating action sequences mixed with storylines which are generic at the least.

As expected and stated earlier, the action scenes in the film deliver, they're breathtaking, loud and a lot of fun to watch. But, the subplots with Gerard Butler's family was lackluster as the film doesn't explore anything new in the genre as I felt like I've seen this film a bunch of times before.

Nevertheless, I like when a film makes a city or a town as a character and displays it with real authenticity and there's a lot to enjoy in Den of Thieves. Surely a rainy night rental.

"Game Night" Overall Thoughts / My Rating - 3.5/5

Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who are rumored to direct the upcoming Flash movie in the DC Universe, Game Night is an action-comedy film starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams in the lead roles. The storyline is about a group of friends who get together for a game night as things quickly go wrong because of the nature of the game and how its conceived.

Advancing to the comedic aspects, this was by far the funniest movie I've seen in a very long time. The jokes are not generic or cheap, the writers delivered with clever writing skills as they worked every single time. Not only the comedic sequences, the storyline was also very crisp, fast-paced and engaging throughout the runtime. Therefore, despite it's few occasional flaws, the film was highly entertaining to watch.

The performances from the Bateman and McAdams were great as they're hilarious, charming and likable as the weird competitive couple. But, Jesse Plemons as the super-creepy next door neighbor was extremely amusing, he stole every single scene he's in and is the stand-out of the entire movie.

Overall, Game Night is funny, entertaining and is a total blast and honestly is one of the best comedies of the past two years. Watch it ASAP!

Instant Movie Reviews #2 (How To Train Your Dragon 2 & About Last Night)

Dean DeBlois - "How To Train Your Dragon 2"

Positives:

1) Action Sequences & BGM
2) CGI & Panorama
3) Direction

Negatives:
1) Conventional storyline

Analysis: Disparate to other summer movies, HTTYD2 sets an example on how a blockbuster summer movie should be made. Following the success of it's prequel, HHTYD2 mesmerizes the standard movie going audience in a splendid way. With it's audacious thrill-seeking storyline, HTTYD2 is packed with an exceptional score, astounding visuals and few staggering action sequences that enriches the movie in every standard.

Final Thoughts: Setting a skyscrapping benchmark in a sea of animation movies, HTTYD2 is an astonishing movie going experience that will admired by people of all age groups. A perfect summer blockbuster.

My Rating - 4/5 | Grade - A

Steve Pink's - "About Last Night"

 Positives:
1) Comedy & Drama
2) Likable characters

Negatives:
1) Stale storyline
2) Formulaic screenplay

Analysis: Steve Pink's modern day reboot of 1986 movie (with the same title) was on the whole an enjoyable watch. Hart's humour and Ealy's emotion blends perfectly with the movie. We actually foresee what was going to happen next but it's an amusing and a gratifying ride for a pleasurable evening watch.

Final Thoughts: If you mingle well with Kevin Hart's comedic humour and an affable storyline of a young couple then About Last Night is definitely for you. It explores nothing in it's genre, but it keeps you entertained all through the journey.

My Rating - 3/5 | Grade - B
