Karwaan - Honest Movie Review

Verdict - "A Road Trip Worth Hitching a Ride!"

Directed by Akarsh Khurana, Karwaan stars Irrfan, Dulquer Salmaan and Mithila Palkar in the lead roles and is one of the three movies releasing on this (August 3rd) weekend. The film follows the journey of three lost souls (Shaukat, Avinash, and Tanya) joining together for an unexpected road trip across the beautiful state of Kerala with the purpose of solving a confusion involving two dead bodies.

Let's start with the story, which I should say is surprisingly unpredictable for the most part. It took a few twists and turns and by and large kept me captivated. Story writer Bejoy Nambiar and screenwriter/director Akarsh Khurana infused quite a few undertones throughout the film whether it's about death, life, self-analysis and introduced a refreshing tone filled with good vibes, affection, and celebration.

Similar to Irrfan's previous film Blackmail, Karwaan is also entertaining in regards to Black Comedy or Dark Comedy. The way the characters made fun of such dramatic situations is something I rarely see in Bollywood, and it exposes the vulnerability and complications of these characters in the most blatant way possible.

Advancing to the characters and performances, Irrfan stole the show with his carefree and jovial attitude and is solely responsible for the majority of laughs. Dulquer Salmaan who is known for his solid acting in South Indian Film Industry is a surprise and charming addition to the film, and perfectly fit the role of Avinash. Mithila Palkar also had a significant presence, and her unusual chemistry or dialogue with DQ worked well inside and out.

But, the heart and soul for this film (at least for me) is the exquisite cinematography that showcased the alluring beauty of Kerala which is essential for a road trip movie. The scenic views accompanied by some sweet-sounding music is a treat for the audience member, and it also positions you in a calm and cheerful mood which is vital for social media magnets like us.

However, before I wrap this up, let me discuss the drawbacks. The film certainly had a few problems especially at the beginning of the second half where it stalls for a while and then picks up, and the 120-minute runtime is IMO a bit unnecessary.

Nevertheless, Karwaan is overall a feel-good road trip film wrapped with few significant themes, amusing jokes, euphonious music, and is a sweet love letter to the "God's Own Country" Kerala. Watch it on a cozy weekend with your loved ones or partners it will not disappoint you.

Mahanati / Nadigaiyar Thilagam - Instant Movie Review #40

Nag Ashwin's - "Mahanati / Nadigaiyar Thilagam"

1) Keerthy Suresh
2) Story and Screenplay
3) Direction
4) Production Design
5) Cinematography
6) Music
7) Performances

1) Subplots

Introduction - Directed by Nag Ashwin, who's responsible for one of the best films of 2015 in Yevade Subramanyam, Mahanati is a biographical drama based on the controversial yet heartening life of Savitri garu, one of the most celebrated and exceptional female actresses of the 50's, 60's and the 70's in both Tollywood and Kollywood film industries. The storyline follows the journey of Savitri from her childhood to get married to her sweetheart Gemini Ganesan and later spoiling her health and relations with her family after getting addicted to alcohol.

Analysis - Now, making a biopic is a tough task, the research, and the execution have to be spot on cause you don't want things to go south when presenting the life stories of one biggest lady superstars. Nag Ashwin, did a fantastic job directing the film and the screenplay (excluding the sub-plots) was well written. The film's objection was to make us love, care and feel for the protagonist's character and it delivered on that level cause I didn't find a single person in the theatre without a teary eye. The technical aspects of the movie, cinematography and production design also deserve a notable appreciation. Also, the music and the background score by Mickey J. Meyer was outstanding and matched the film's vibe remarkably.

Performances - Now, portraying Savitri garu and her character accurately is one giant obstacle or even casting the right actor to represent the character is also a huge task. With that being said, Keerthy Suresh was phenomenal to a point where I believed that I was watching Savitri garu on-screen. Her ability to transform into this character who has a multitude of variations has to be appreciated and she carried her role perfectly. She is one of the reasons why the movie worked out so well. Her co-star Dulquer Salmaan along with the supporting cast, Samantha Akkineni, and Vijay Devarakonda also did their best in their respective roles.

Verdict - Overall, Mahanati is an incredible, emotional, thoughtful and a well-illustrated biopic of one of the most beloved actresses of South Indian Cinema and this film did the best it could to display her love for humanity, acting, and movies. So far, without a doubt, the best film of the year.

Instant Movie Review #20 (OK Bangaram)

Mani Ratnam's - "OK Bangaram"

1) Cinematograph
2) Music
3) Cast & Performances
4) Production Design

1) Story and Screenplay

Plot: In a contemporary world, OK Bangaram takes place in Mumbai and after an interesting first encounter, Adi and Tara become friends in a flash, as they find out that they share the same thoughts and opinions about marriage and many little things. Will the couple endure and carry through their relationship in love?

Analysis: With one of the best storytellers in the business, Mani Ratnam, this film entirely suffers from a perplexed structure; many scenes for the movie feel random, slapdash, and it's either a hit or a miss. I certainly appreciate the mod offbeat storytelling aspect of the film, but when the screenwriter is trying to present a particular scene, he must make sure that it carries some importance to the content.

Bummed out with a sluggish story and screenplay, the cinematography is surely an astounding aspect in the movie. Every single frame in the movie had its own exquisiteness and magnificence, mainly PC Sreeram and the crew behind the camera and lighting department should be admired for their efforts.

Rahman's music stands out as another fascinating aspect, as it helps the movie throughout the process and renders support when it's needed.

Performances: The cast absolutely looks refreshing in the film, Dulquer Salmaan, and Nithya Menen were captivating and lovely in the movie. They had the perfect chemistry between each other and it surely worked even with a dull premise.

Verdict: Overall, OK Bangaram is a light-hearted movie filled with happy moments which are not plausible, as it never feels imposing. Watch it for the incredible camera work, euphonious and the appealing cast.

Vaayai Moodi Pesavum – Movie Review

Verdict: “Highly Entertaining and thought provoking”

Vaayai Moodi Pesavum is a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie directed by Balaji Mohan, the director who made a remarkable debut with Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi. It has Dulquer Salman, son of Mollywood Superstar Mammotty and Nazriya Nazim in the leads. It also has Madhoo, Pandiyarajan, Robo Shankar & John Vijay playing in pivotal roles.

The film takes place in Panimalai, where people are affected by a mysterious disease caused by H10N10 virus which makes them dumb. Many people are infected by the virus and how the outbreak of this diseases cause problem in their life and how do they finally find the solution forms the plot.

Director Balaji Mohan had come up with an entirely different concept and made it into a beautifully sculpted film with unique narrative style and well written screenplay. The first half was a laugh riot. The director himself appears as a News reporter, reporting the happenings in Panimalai in a mocking way. He does justice to the film’s title in the second half of the movie.

Dulquer Salman plays a door-to-door salesman. He sells the product an adhesive with his eloquence. He is a perfect match to the warm hearted character. He is attractive and sure to become girls’ heartthrob.

Nazriya Nazim plays the role of a doctor who is shy and reserved and is being controlled by her boyfriend whom she is not interested with. Her onscreen chemistry with Dulquer Salman is admirable.

All the other supporting actors had enough screen space to show their acting skills. Robo Shankar and Pandiyarajan were exceptionally good and they were the most hilarious ones in the movie while portraying the roles of “Mattai” Ravi and Minister respectively.

Cinematography and Background scores were top notch in the film. Whether capturing the beauty of the Western Ghats or showing the fully furnished houses or hospital, Cinematographer Soundharajan makes no mistake and pictures them in an exquisite way.

Debutant Music Director Sean Roldan keeps the momentum of the film with his background score. The bgm was stupendous during the second half, where it required the most.

Editor Abhinav Sunder Nayak has done a fair job in his work and gives the ensemble list of supporting cast their space and keeps the movie engaged.

Finally, Vaayai Moodi Pesavum is an entirely different approach in the contemporary era of filmmaking. Balaji Mohan had delivered a highly entertaining movie which also provokes some thoughts that may even change your way of living in the end. Vaayai Moodi Pesavum is definitely one of the finest movies of the year and Kudos to Director and his whole team.
