The Big Sick - Instant Movie Review #36

Michael Showalter's - "The Big Sick"

Positives
1) Story and Screenplay
2) Performances

Introduction and Plot - With a production budget of 5 million, The Big Sick is one of the highest-grossing Independent Films of 2017 bringing in a whopping 54 million in box-office revenue, and it's one of the best films I've seen this year. The movie follows the real-life story of Kumail Nanjiani and his now wife Emily and narrates about how they first met, how did they break-up and how Kumail got across his in-laws played (brilliantly) by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano while Emily is going through surgery for a severe lung disease.

Analysis - One of the reasons why I liked this film so much is because of its heartwarming storyline. Being based on a true story, you expect the writers and directors to make the movie as authentic as possible, and they deliver that with perfection. The interactions and the dialogue between the characters felt sincere, and the comedic sequences were thoroughly amusing.

Performances - This is the first time I've come across Kumail Nanjiani's performance in any movie or a TV show, and I should say that I enjoyed his presence entirely. Playing himself in the film, he brought that innocence and goofiness to his character which was a total blast. Zoe Kazan is another excellent addition to the film. I've previously seen her in the movie "What If" starring opposite Daniel Radcliffe and it's a delight to watch her perform. Holly Hunter and Ray Romano are the show-stealers in my opinion. Their interactions with Kumail were soo natural and comical as the film didn't feel dull or sluggish at any given moment.

Verdict - Overall, The Big Sick is a complete surprise for me, I didn't expect much going into this movie, but I ended up loving it when the credits rolled. It's hard to find a film filled with jokes, an earnest love-story, and serious family dramas these days and The Big Sick is one of the few movies that I enjoyed watching for the first time and even the second time.
