Instant Movie Review #9 (V/H/S: Viral)

October 31, 2014

Various - "V/H/S: Viral"

Negatives:
1) Maddening video effects and editing style.
2) Brainless characters.
3) The most discernable situations.
4) Thoughtless storylines.

Analysis: A movie series with inventivenes and ingenuity, if you're a big fan of the first two V/H/S movies, you may probably get deeply disappointed by this indolent third installment.

Spoilers apart! What's the most abhorrent part of this movie? Apart from the chapter "Parallel Universes" the whole movie is an abomination to humanity. It's sluggish and sloppy with the most stupidest characters I've ever seen on screen. And apart from all these negative points, the one thing which bothered me the most is the aggravating editing style of the movie. Why? Just why?

Let's think about the term "Viral" from the movie's perspective. The focal point of the movie is about how teenagers are hooked up to shoot these viral videos and how it's ruining they're lives instead. That's a significant message! But, is it sported well in the movie? I would say "no" for the most part.

It takes turns, does something gross and unrelated and finally affronts the whole point of the movie. And that's the main hitch of the movie, it does feel like a substandard versions of shorts put together in seventy seven minute movie.

Final Verdict: V/H/S Viral is just disappointing with no enhancing components attached to it. It was a major stepdown to the franchise and was not even worth watching for atleast ten minutes. Stay away!

Instant Movie Review #8 (What If)

October 27, 2014

Michael Dowse's - "What If"

Positives

1) Daniel Radcliffe & Zoe Kazan's Chemistry and Performances.
2) Few Wholesome Love-Romantic Scenes.
3) The Contemporary Vibe

Negatives
1) The Lifeless Humor.
2) Typical and Predictable Storyline.

Analysis - Contemporary romantic-comedies became customary in this modern era. However the plot of every movie somehow dwindles around a chief theme and we often see different takes on this idea from time to time.

The idea about two friends finding love in each other is not getting any younger, but What If finds a way to make the movie work.

It was typical and predictable, but it's refreshing joining the journey of love between these two individuals.

Also, the movie was quick, charming and authentic and moreover you never feel bored watching this ninety five minute movie.

Verdict - To summarize the movie, What If is a laid-back movie which you can watch it with your beloved friend. It doesn't deal with something new and diverse but it just embraces the theme and the genre.

My Rating - 3/5 | Grade - B (Worth a watch!)

Karthikeya - Movie Review

October 26, 2014

Verdict - "Karthikeya is a failed attempt."

I'm a sucker of diverse movies in Tollywood, movie audience are geared up to see a change and they often dearly support significant movies which are worth mentioning. Does Karthikeya fall into that category? Meh!

To summarize the plot of the movie, it revolves around an ancient temple in Subramanyapuram unnerved with many superstitions and irrational beliefs. In a converse world Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddhartha) is a brainy medical student who has the curiosity over baffling mysteries. What happens when an intellectual plucky individual takes on a haunting yet cryptic mystery, narrates the other half of the movie.

The movie has a great potential here. It can be dark, mysterious and also amorous and charming at the same time, but the movie poorly failed in all these aspects. Why? Should the director Chandoo Mondeti take the blame? Probably yes!

Let me put in plain words here, if I can just judge the movie by it's plot and trailers, I completely thought that there's something interesting going on in the movie and my expectations are pretty high. But what hauled me out of the movie is the part to part screenplay. It just felt like I'm watching various scenes attached together without an adhesive technique, I'm impassive about the movie from it's start.

Also about the appalling climax of the movie, it was abrupt and impulsive. After a scrawny set up, the film still has the ability to explain the twists well by taking some good amount of screen time. Sure! I'm surprised with the startling loop of the movie, but did it pay off really well? No!

Nikhil Siddhartha's performance was decent, he didn't really play a massive character, his one of a kind persona was something we've seen before and he does a great job with whatever he's been requested to do. Swathi's character has no scope, she felt like a forced misfit in the movie and I didn't feel her alluring screen presence in the movie. Also a big shoutout to the two comedians Sathya and Praveen for their amusing performances, a saving grace indeed!

Nevertheless, I'l atleast give some appreciation to the whole crew for trying something unorthodox and varied. But the movie was ruined by it's frail screenplay and mediocre direction. I recommend you to skip this movie without wavering your mind.

Happy New Year - Movie Review

October 25, 2014

Verdict - "Happy New Year is Amusing. That is All! Yet Another Guilty Movie Pleasure."

There's one miserable fact about all the popular and vaunted movies these days, we do find a deficiency in their superiority and quality. Sounds indignant right? But that's how I felt while watching Happy New Year. Don't get me wrong, it's completely likable but is it worth the wait? No!

Without getting much into detail, the story is about six so called "losers" executing an utterly impossible heist which is intertwined with a dance competition in which they should participate to complete the mission. Pretty generic right?

It's all about entertainment and that's the only redeeming factor about Happy New Year. The movie never stops to amuse, I found myself laughing hard during the movie, but it will probably diminish after a while. I'm not sure that you will enjoy the humour in a second watch, it just evaporates.

Now that I got your attention, here are few negative attributes of the movie, mainly the conventional screenplay, you can just sit back promptly guess where the movie is going and the movie annex at the exact same spot that you estimated previously. The movie sets up these introductions and significant scenes from time to time and it comes off with absolutely no surprise.

Also the movie is three hours long. Why? Is it a tricky story to narrate? Absolutely not! In fact there's nothing innovative in the movie to explain. The movie was precise and particular and I don't want that to happen. And in order to buoy up the actual (predictable) climax, the movie was filled with numerous unwanted and outlandish scenes that felt unneccesary.

Let me explain how ludicrous the writing and screenplay was in the movie, without spoiling anything, I don't mind a movie tossing a reference once or twice in the movie, but Happy New Year exceeds the limitations and after a good amount of time, it just felt inferior to me. Is there nothing more to abide, which can cheer up the audience? This shows that the movie was completely misplaced in the writing department.

Apart from the writing department, the technical department did a remarkable job in the movie. The cinematography by Manush Nandan was exquisite, I do understand that setting up these ostentatious sets and panoramas is a tough call (and I appreciate the production team for that) but capturing them accurately and perfectly is a difficult task and few scenes in the movie were completely breathtaking that you just can't stop wink your eye.

Regarding the major plot point about the movie, which was "dance". It was not that remarkable and it really felt silly after few scenes. If being funny and casual is the concealed aspect of this attribute then I'm okay with it and it didn't feel that way. But, nonetheless as I stated before, it looked dazzling and that's a significant commercial trait about the movie.

Before I give you my take on the performances in the movie. Let me explain my little concern about the characters in the movie. I did enjoy them, but do they make an impression deep inside our heart? Mainly the character of Charlie, which was the most inferior character among the bunch. What do you think?

The performances in the movie were great when you take them as an entertaining aspect. Abhishek Bachchan was impressive and astonishes us with his timing and body language. Sonu Sood and Boman Irani's charisma added enough balance to the movie. Vivaan Shah has nothing much to impress in the movie. Deepika looks stunning and enacted well as the female lead of the movie, but her character was a bit affronted in few sequences.

Shah Rukh Khan was completely inapt in the movie, his character was a bit underwhelming and I didn't really care about his emotional part in the movie. He was a performer and it was great watching him flaunt his abs and his magnifying persona, but does he leave a mark?

To conclude, Happy New Year is a complete gulity pleasure for me, where I can get entertained with the nonsensical things happening around me. The movie will be cherished by commercial audience and will probably break all the box-office records. But I can fairly tell you that the comedic aspect is the only saving grace about the movie and if that's your jam, go watch the movie without any hesitation.

My Rating - 2.5/5 | Grade - C+ (It deserves your attention for a while!)

Kaththi – Movie Review

October 23, 2014

Verdict: "Sensitive subject dealt with utmost brilliance, A.R.Murugadoss strikes again".

Kaththi the latest outing of Vijay and A.R.Murugadoss after Thupakki released today with sky-high expectations. It has “Ilaiyathalabathy” Vijay playing dual role as Kathiresan and Jeevanandham, supported by Samantha, Satish and Neil Nithin Mukesh.

Kathiresan (Vijay) is an escaped convict from jail who wants to make some fast cash and leave to Bangkok. Jeevanandham is a social activist who is fighting against a MNC trying to capture his village for its groundwater. In a blink of eye, Kathiresan finds himself in the shoes of Jeevanandham fighting against the evil corporate biggie Neil Nithin Mukesh and Jeevanandham lands in Jail.

A.R.Murugadoss deals with the most unrecognised problems in the society like farming lands being taken by Multinational companies, farmer’s suicide and media’s working only for TRP Ratings. It’s indeed a bold attempt by A.R.Murugadoss to take up a sensitive subject.

But he deals it with ease. A.R.Murugadoss has scripted the movie very well and the screenplay is engrossing despite few sluggish scenes in the first half. Dialogues were too sharp and mind blowing in many scenes, especially the one line definition of Communism is not to be missed.

Vijay had given some never before seen performance in Kaththi. There was no usual mass introduction scene and introduction song with philosophy in Kaththi. Samantha didn’t have much screen time expect for appearing in songs and supporting Vijay with his cause.

Neil Nithin Mukesh, the handsome villain, did a great job as a corporate biggie. Satish was as usual good with his one-liners. All the old people in the movie have been carefully handpicked to make their part look sentimental.

Anirudh’s steals the show with his magnificent Background score. Already the songs had become a huge hit but the misplacement of it in the movie makes it unenjoyable.

George C. William’s cinematography mixes with the story and with help of other technicians make in synchronization with colours. “Lalgudi” Ilaaiyaraaja’s art direction is brilliant, especially in ‘Aathi” song.

Finally, Kaththi has all the ingredients to make it a perfect commercial entertainer with a strong social message. Vijay, A.R.Murugadoss and the whole Kaththi team deserves applause for bringing in the much needed social awareness.

The Judge - Movie Review

October 20, 2014

Verdict - "Two stupendous performances followed with a good storyline. The Judge is totally watchable".

Robert Downey Jr. as a charismatic conceited lad yet again? It's like Tony Stark playing a poised lawyer. Either way, I never get bored of watching him playing the same character.

After receiving a call from his brother Glen stating that their mother had passed away. Hank Palmer (RDJ) decides to drive back to his hometown Indiana (which he labels as a miserable to live), to pay his condolences. Despite the fact that he doesn't share a good relationship with his father Joseph (Robert Duvall), Hank settles on to stay and represent his father as a prosecutor after Joseph being doubted as the main offender in a murder case.

The most significant aspect that I liked about the movie is it's totally relatable and authentic. I found myself deeply engrossed by the vibe of the movie because it's a conventional story of a family who was in a bad situation. I can link up to that!

Screenwriters, Nick Schenk and Bill Dubuque did a decent job in narrating a wholesome tale about how relationships change from time to time and what they actually mean at the utmost stage of an assorted life. It was serene and simple which I count as a redeeming quality for the movie.

Likewise, I really enjoyed the humour in the movie which was quick and instant. Striking out few jokes out of nowhere and actually making them explode is a tough task and I'm genuinely impressed that it made me laugh a lot which took me by surprise.

Few complaints comprise the unwanted scenes and characters in the movie. Most of them include Vera Farmiga in it, I thought that she was wasted in this movie, her scenes were a bit pointless, as she felt like just another gratuitous character in the movie. And that opens up my argument that the movie was a bit long, it could've been easily trimmed down to two hours, as I felt that the actual run time was redundant.

Also the technical aspects were impressive for the most part. Janusz Kamiński's camera work was dazzling when it comes to the wide angle shots, the light and shade and the scenic countryside panorama's were eye-catching. Not to mention about the background score in the movie which was quite soothing and incorporated with the movie very well.

Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall the two main protagonists were together remarkable in the movie. Their chemistry worked out really well because of the self-seeking characters, as we're put in a disarray of many mixed feelings about these two individuals and it actually intrigued me more into the movie.

Overall, I enjoyed The Judge for the most part, I was interested and immersed into the movie although it had a few complaints in several places. A very well directed and written movie and I totally recommend watching it for the incredible performances from RDJ and Duvall all alone.

Instant Movie Review #7 (Sex Tape)

October 17, 2014

Jake Kasdan's - "Sex Tape"

Positives:
1) Few swift witty jokes

Negatives:
1) Flaunted storyline
2) Hasty screenplay
3) Annoying characters
4) Inequity to it's main genre

Analysis: Now! What annoys me the most about this movie is it's slipshod take. The movie is about a private Sex Tape which was leaked accidentally, I can see a great potential here to deliver a light-hearted comical drama with few seductive scenes which adheres to the movie core plot and genre flawlessly.

Did it comply with what I pointed out above? No! It's negligent and completely offhand on every single frame. The characters doesn't make any sense neither the screenplay, which seemed a bit unsystematic in it's narration.

Moreover, don't even get animated by the storyline of the movie, it was a complete bamboozle.

Final Verdict: To conclude, Sex Tape is probably one of the worst movie I've seen this year. I do appreciate the marketing of the movie. But! Is it a mislead? Yes! Completely. Stay away from this movie, you've got better things to do in life.

Annabelle - Movie Review

October 13, 2014

Verdict - "Stay away from this creepy looking doll. It's stale and insipid!"

Yet another spin-off movie which was obviously disappointing! That's how Hollywood works people, and I don't blame any studio executive for making these movies. Why should I? If majority of theaudience (including me) are interested to watch these movies, why not make them.

The fact that this movie made domestically thirty eight million in it's opening weekend proves the fact that people are paying to go watch these movies even though they're aware about the fact that the movie was terrible.

Let me put in plain words about what went wrong with this movie. Intially, the storyline! It was completely indolent, contemplating that by tossing up few random things like a happy married couple or a scary looking demon would make a superior movie is complete absurdity.

I'l be supportive here, I can see a great potential in narrating a good story in this movie, but it just doesn't use the opportunity to use it.

Even with a basic storyline, there's always a good possibility to build interesting characters add in some good dialogue and deliver an exhilarating movie and Annabelle does'nt even stand out in this category too. The characters are stale, anticipated and uninteresting in every approach. Why? Because the writers made them look in that fashion and beyond doubt we don't actually care about any of these characters being hurted, tortured and murdered.

John R. Leonetti's direction should be appreciated in few memorable scenes in the movie that were quite disturbing and petirfying. I genuinely enjoyed those sequences but Leonetti didn't uphold that hope throughout the whole movie. It felt like a small bunch of random people doing the most ridiculous thing possible.

And I also want to share my thoughts on the climax of the movie. It just felt unsettling and we did missed something from it. Or maybe my anticipation levels are just too high? Also I just want to plug-in that it's the worst possible climax of a movie I've seen in a while.

Nevertheless, Annabelle kept me on the edge of my seat for a good five minutes. Excluding that it was indeed a very disappointing movie which was loud and insipid and completely took me out of the experience. Not even worth a rental!

Haider - Spoiler Movie Review

October 11, 2014

Verdict - "Enthralling and unsettling. Haider is probably the best movie of 2014".

Walking into this movie, I was completely open minded. I knew nothing about the synopsis of the movie, never watched the trailers nor any of the song previews and judging by the marketing of the movie and the fact that it's going head to head with Bang Bang, I did have a negative notion about the movie. So I was sitting in the theatre, completely with no expectations and by the end of the movie I'm pretty glad about myself for keeping it that way.

Now! I do have numerous reasons about why I loved this movie, but I want to explain them to you in a detailed way. So I settled to go with a semi-spoiler movie review without concentrating much about the plot.

Adapted and inspired by many external sources, Vishal Bharadwaj and Basharat Peer's comprehensive writing and the unnerving facet of the movie was completely mentioning.

That uncertainty factor is always surrounded throughout the narrative part of the movie, you're sitting there hoping it to be good, waiting for something happen and the amazing part is that it keeps you thinking. You rather know where the movie is going but you can't really point out the direction it takes.

Let me get into detail about the "uncertainty" factor in the movie. As actress Tabu said, the mother and son relationship between Haider and Ghazala was totally odd and distinctive. You just can't describe the relationship between the two of them in particular, it always baffles around love, hate, care and assisted in boosting up the characters very well by keeping the befuddling factor alive.

Also the climax of the movie, not only it is one of the best I've seen in a while, it left me with a harrowing stain inside my brain, where I stopped sat down about ten-twenty minutes with a damp feeling that agitated me for a bit. And I like when movies which elevate me to that level of significance.

The other diverse part that blended well with the movie was the humour and I'm quite surprised about how well they executed it. I agree with the fact that fitting in humour in this type of genre was a tough task. It should be intelligent and sharp to pop out instantly. The movie implemented it properly, it never sounded like a throw away line to dislike.

Since it's also based on many true events happened in Kashmir back in the day, this movie was brutal, mainly the climax, it was pretty unsettling because you're extracted into this nefarious atmosphere and it was pretty uneasy to see every character die in the movie.

Coming back to the direction of the movie, this is probably the best I've seen in a while, he never traversed the boundaries of the movie and that really helped the authenticity in the movie. And also the dialogues in the movie are completely unusual, they're facile, whimsical and totally profound.

Regarding the technical aspects of the movie, Pankaj Kumar's exquisite cinematography was astonishing, mainly the graveyard scene in the acme and the wide angle shots used in Bismil song were dazzling to gaze at. Capturing the theme of the movie was a pretty tough task to exhibit and Kumar did a decent job in maintaining it well.

This movie was totally a reconciliation to Shahid's career, his high intensity, emotive responses and the livid persona was mind-boggling. Mostly his scenes with Tabu (who also gave an exceptional performance) were the best out of the bunch. The peculiar chemistry worked out pretty well between them and I confidently say that he deserves an applause for his performance.

Nevertheless, I may have few tiny complaints about the length of the movie or the unhurried first half of the movie. But I do concede that the movie is a slow burn, it only gets better sequentially. I do quote this as "The best movie of the year" because it worked in all departments depicted and also paid a well deserved homage to all it's orginal sources. If you buoy up for an atypical movie, Haider might be the perfect one.

Instant Movie Review #6 (Locke)

October 8, 2014

Steven Knight's - "Locke"

Postives:
1) Tom Hardy's remarkable performance
2) Exhilarating screenplay
3) Steven Knight's splendid direction
4) Rousing background score
5) Other supporting characters (whom we never get to see in the movie)

Negatives:
1) Story
2) The curiosity to rewatch the movie will never cross your mind.

Analysis: Just imagine the entire movie in a car with only one live character talking on a phone. Sounds boring right?

But! This movie is a complete exception. Locke is an stupendous, edge-of-the-seat drama which demands your attention for every single frame.

Tom Hardy suppressed his role to a great extent, and we actually care and worry about his character alot even though he only welds to a certain set of things throughout the whole movie.

Steven Knight's did a tremendous job, his ability in building up an unusual storyline and narrating it in a fascinating way should be appreciated. The characters and their arguments, every single frame in the movie makes sense and that's pretty tough to deliver in a movie of a different kind.

Bang Bang! - Movie Review

October 5, 2014

Verdict - "I consider this as a complete displeasure, not even a guilty movie pleasure."

Yet another disappointment? Movies with whopping amount of money turning into a debacle is quite a regular term we often listen in this modern-era. Does Bang Bang fall into that category of movies?

Without referring to any Hollywood movie, here's the plot of the movie! In an illusory world, Hrithik Roshan is in pursuit for thieving something unusual and impractical. What's the whole reason behind nicking a precious item unfolds the storyline of the movie.

In detail! This movie completely has no substance under it, ofcourse, there is a specific plot to prolong and make it interesting. But the movie doesn't really make an effort to do that, inept things happen in the most generic way possible. Bullets start to fly and every conceivable thing will eventually blow, and that encloses my major complaint about the movie.

Yes! I do expect few enthralling, well chorepgraphed action scenes, but I also bother about the reason behind it and the movie neglects something which is significant and necessary for an action movie.

Also the nonsensical characters is also one the major drawback of the movie. Katrina's character felt a little cartoony and completely tainted the vibe of the movie, I also felt that and incredible antagonist was lacking in the movie. And moreover, it was really absurd to see an intelligent character like Hrithik Roshan fall into few tranquil traps.

Should we blame the screenwriters Sujoy Ghosh and Suresh Nair for everything happened? Completely not! I do understand that there is some pressure behind them, but depending on the original material, there's lot more they can do with the plot of the movie and all we got is an enormous action scene for every ten minutes.

However I do appreciate the attempt by the film-maker Siddharth Anand, the movie was gorgeous to gaze at, they were few well shot and choreographed action sequences worth watching and I do understand the hardowork the entire crew deposited to make it work. But there should be a splendid pay-off and I don't think the movie will recieve nothing but hate from people.

About the technical aspects of the movie, the song Meherbaan was gorgeously shot as well as the entire movie, props to cinematographers Ben Jasper , Sunil Patel & Vikas Sivaraman! I do a small concern about the CGI in the movie, but it was tolerable. Music directors, Vishal-Shekhar did an unique job regarding the songs of the movie which were quite easy on the ear.

Hrithik Roshan was vibrant and fits the character well. He has the charisma and the dynamic build-up to attract the viewers and I enjoyed watching him in the movie. Katrina Kaif was a total eye-candy in the movie, she was appealing and let's keep it that way because her acting was not up to the mark, and the movie hassled on her shoulders for the most part.

On the whole, Bang Bang! was a complete displeasure, it's definitely the kind of movie where you can just rent it on a rainy day and watch without keeping much of attention. A little more effort on the screenplay could've definitely helped the movie, but nevertheless it's a misused opportunity which will hurt the box office of the movie. Not my strong recommendation!

Grade - C (Meh! Probably a rental)

Instant Movie Review #5 (Khoobsurat)

October 3, 2014

Shashanka Ghosh's - "Khoobsurat"

Positives:
1) Witty chemistry between Sonam & Fawad Khan
2) Music and background score
3) The wispy vibe throughout the movie
4) Shashanka Ghosh's direction
5) Production

Negatives:
1) The story which is past it's best
2) The insipid screenplay at times

Analysis: Commencing in an immaculate way, Khoobsurat stroked me with surprise. And I never ever expected it to happen. The crisp and the wholesome vibe of the movie was by far the major affirmative component of the movie.

Sonam's sparkling charisma, Fawad's gentlemen allure and Kirron Kher's generic humour boosted the movie's decisive part to a whole new level.

Should appreciate Shashanka Ghosh's take on the movie, his style and narrating the movie in a contemporary way was neoteric and innovative.

And as I pointed out initially the soulful music of the movie was euphonious and served as a significant component of the movie.

Final Thoughts: Overall, Khoobsurat is an amiable movie going experience where you just sit back enjoy and relish. It was definitely not flawless, but it definitely surprised me and I can't just disregard the fact that it's a good movie.
